Val Thorens in France opens on Saturday and with plenty of fresh snow forecast it should be a great opening weekend!
Thursday is a predominantly fine and sunny day across Switzerland, but very heavy snow and freezing temperatures are forecast over the weekend.
It is predominantly sunny across the Italian Alps which is providing lovely skiing conditions. A drop in temperatures is forecast over the weekend and this is expected to be accompanied by heavy snowfalls.
Great news for all of our reported Andorran resorts as they will open this weekend, a week earlier than expected.
Oppdal in Norway has had a massive amount of snow this week. Cold temperatures and clearer weather over the weekend should provide fantastic powder skiing for their first days of the season.
None of our reported resorts in Germany are open for the 2008/9 season.
None of our reported resorts in Bulgaria are open for the 2008/9 season.
The Lecht in Scotland is closed due to lack of snow and The Cairngorm ski area is closed due to lift maintenance. The other Scottish resorts we report on are yet to open for the 2008/9 season.

Four resorts in Austria are hoping to open for the season this weekend; Axamer Lizum, Obertauern (10/15cm), Schladming and Zell am See. These openings will be condition dependant but with lots of snow and cold temperatures forecast for the weekend they should be able to open a few runs. Axamer Lizum, Schladming and Zell am See did not have any snow depth measurements to report when this was written.
Obergurgl (20/120cm) continues to offer great early season skiing and they have now opened runs down to the village. 50km of open pistes are available to ski on.
The glacier at Sölden (31/90cm) also offers great skiing with 34km of pistes open. With heavy snow and much colder temperatures forecast over the weekend conditions should only improve!
|
France | | |
It is possible to ski back down to the bottom of the funicular at Tignes (10/70cm) but only the Double M piste is open this low. Over the weekend they are expecting temperatures to plummet and heavy snow to fall. Conditions should be fantastic in the early part of next week after the snowfall.
Val Thorens (10/15cm) is set to open on 22nd November. They have been operating their snow cannons working all week which has provided some good cover on the runs they plan to open on Saturday. The heavy snow across the Alps over the weekend should also fall at Val Thorens so conditions should be fantastic for their opening weekend!

Switzerland

The ski area at Zermatt (10/220cm) offers a massive 163km of open pistes on Thursday. This is by far the most of any resort we report on at the moment. Their area is linked with Cervinia and the snow is deep enough to enable you to ski over. The good news is that more heavy snow is forecast over the weekend, so conditions should only get better!
Saas Fee (3/150cm) has seven lifts open on Thursday. There is great skiing available under largely sunny skies and the cold weather is helping to keep the snow in good condition. They have fresh snowfalls and much colder weather forecast over the weekend and into next week.
Crans Montana, Davos/Klosters (40/43cm), St Moritz and Wengen all hope to open this weekend and the snow that is forecast should mean it's a great first weekend for all the resorts.
|
Italy | | |
Cervinia (30/195cm) continues to offer good skiing on their open runs. The deep snow base up on the Plateau Rosa should be further increased over the weekend as heavy snowfalls and very cold weather is forecast. 54cm of new snow is forecast to land by Monday next week and temperatures on the upper slopes will fall to -20ºc. The snow should be fantastic over the weekend and into next week but be sure to wrap up well as it will be bitterly cold.
The Presena Glacier at Passo Tonale (0/250cm) has all three of its lifts open on Thursday. The snow conditions are very good and there is a great selection of runs available on Thursday. Heavy snow is also forecast for Passo Tonale over the weekend and into next week and temperatures should fall to.

The Grandvalira resorts are scheduled to open for the season from Saturday while the Vallnord resorts will be open this weekend and then not open daily until the following weekend. This is a superb start to the Andorran ski season with more snow than is normally expected at this time of year. Let us hope that this is a sign of a superb season to come!

Oppdal (50/60cm) has received a lot of new snow this week. The heavy snow is forecast to last until Friday afternoon when the skies are expected to clear. The sun should stay for the weekend and temperatures will be low, so expect some fantastic powder with all the new snow!

Sälen (10/35cm) in Sweden has one lift open on Thursday. The terrain they have on offer is very limited at the moment, due to the lack of snow. A dusting of snow is forecast for Friday and Saturday but otherwise it should be cold and dry.

Breckenridge (46cm), Keystone (46cm) and Copper Mountain (46cm) all have the same base depth and a similar number of lifts open; five, three and four respectively. Mild and predominantly sunny weather should last through the weekend and into next week.
Mammoth (30/122cm) continues to offer good skiing, despite their recent mini heat wave. Snow cover away from the runs is becoming patchy but the runs themselves are being very well maintained, hence the consistent base depth. More sunny weather is forecast over the next five days.
Snowbird (53cm) and Solitude (53cm) in Utah have two and four lifts open respectively. The weather at both resorts is fairly mild and sunny. No new snow is forecast in the next 5 days, so fast and hardpacked pistes should be the norm.
Over on the east coast of America the temperature has dropped significantly, allowing many resorts to commence their snow making once again. Killington (46/76cm) has a great base depth and is offering top to bottom skiing on Thursday. This is expected to be their first proper day of the season as they plan to stay open every day from now until the end of April. There is a similar story at Sunday River (15/30cm) but their base depth isn't as deep, although top to bottom skiing will be available.

Canada | | |
Sun Peaks (26/29cm) is hoping to open its ski area on 23rd November. They have been receiving light snow all week and this is helping the snow base.
Banff (20/63cm) is expecting a dusting of snow on Friday and Saturday but it should be cold and dry after the weekend. Seven lifts are open in the Big 3 ski area on Thursday; five at Sunshine Village and two at Lake Louise. Mt Norquay is only open for weekend skiing at the moment.
Jasper (50cm) is hoping to open another two lifts on Saturday, adding to the one that is already open. Only a handful of pistes are open, but more will hopefully open when the two lifts start turning on Saturday. Light snow is forecast for Friday and Saturday.

| European Weather Outlook
| | |
The coming weekend and next week are looking very promising for the European Alps. A significant drop in temperature and large snowfalls are expected. Some resorts in Switzerland and western Austria are expecting up to 115cm of fresh snow to fall by Tuesday next week. The sharp drop in temperatures should ensure this is fantastic quality snow and may allow many resorts to open ahead of schedule.
The long range forecast expects temperatures to remain low across the whole of the Alps, which is fantastic news!

| North American Weather Outlook
| | |
Dry and mild weather is still dominating most of the Rocky Mountains. Daytime temperatures of above 10ºc are common and they are only just dropping below freezing at night.
The weather is set to remain like this for at least the next five days and no new snow is forecast at most of the resorts in Colorado. Timberline in the north west of America is expecting a bit more snow, with 15cm expected to fall on Thursday and Friday.
The weather over on the east coast has improved for snowsports fans! Significantly lower temperatures and fairly substantial snowfalls mean that Killington, Sunday River and Mount Snow can re-open. Stowe in Vermont is also planning to open this weekend and light snow is forecast.
In Canada snow is once again forecast across most of the resorts in Alberta and British Columbia. Temperatures are expected to remain low over the weekend but could increase slightly at the beginning of next week. Skeena heli ski area has nearly 60cm of new snow forecast before Tuesday and Whistler has 54cm forecast in the same time. The snow at Whistler will fall right down to valley level at 675m. 39cm is expected to fall on Friday on the upper slopes, which is fantastic.
